Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly on Monday began the impeachment of the State Governor, Sullivan Chime, after a sitting they had at 5am.

Fourteen members of the 22-member House, led by Speaker Eugene Odo, signed the impeachment notice which had been served on the governor at the time of this report.

However, just as the news of the impeachment began to spread, the other eight members of the House immediately converged, led by Deputy Speaker Chime Oji, who is also a cousin of the governor to suspend the entire fourteen members, including the Speaker and other principal officers.

The eight lawmakers who are said to be loyal to the governor, also recalled Johnbull Nwaogu, a suspended member of the House to increase their number.

It was learnt that the eight, all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had been at loggerheads with the governor since the party's primaries late 2014 when many of them were edged out.

The Governor had asked the state assembly to approve the funds for a secretariat project, but he was turned down by the state assembly. The lawmakers had refused to approve the fund, asking why the request for 11 billion naira is coming less than a month to hand over to a new administration.

The Governor then allegedly induced some members of the assembly with some money to impeach the House Speaker, Eugene Odoh. Thus in the meantime, Odoh has been reportedly impeached by eight out of the 24 members of the House.

However, the governor’s spokesman, Chukwudi Achife confirmed in a chat with Channels Television that Odoh had been removed and a new Speaker elected, while also dismissing alleged plot to remove the Chime.
