Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has filed for an interlocutory injunction to thwart efforts of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to probe political office holders elected on the party’s platform.

Parties in the summon include Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amakiri; Senator Magnus Abe; and Chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government Council, Chimbiko Akarolo.

The anti-Amaechi state executive chaired by Felix Obuah had recently inaugurated a Performance Evaluation Committee to examine the performance of PDP office in the state.

But according to the governor’s lawyer, Emenike Ebite, PDP lacks the constitutional power to perform such oversight function on democratically elected public officers.

“They want to carry out oversight functions on political office holders,” he said. “It is not in our constitution. It is not in the 1999 constitution as amended. That is why the parties have approached the court and they’ve prayed the court to stop the process from going on.”

Justice Godpower Opruma of the Port Harcourt High court adjourned hearing on the suit to 4th of July 2013.
