A teacher in Edo State was the subject of scorn during Tuesday’s verification of the certificates of primary school teachers in the state.

Asked to read a sworn affidavit she tendered as part of her credentials. Mrs. Augusta Odemwingie of Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba Okha Local Government stumbled several times to the consternation of all present.

Governor of the state Adams Oshiomhole who arrived at the State Staff Training Centre where the exercise held unannounced could not hide his disbelief. Oshiomhole was scrutinising the credentials of some of the teachers when he told Mrs. Odenwingie to read the affidavit she presented. After watching the stop-start, error-strewn performance of the teacher, the governor voiced his disappointment.

“If you can’t read, what do you teach the pupils?” he queried. “What do you write on the board?”

Similarly disappointed was Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Patrick Ikosimi, who also spoke against the “embarrassing” performance of the teacher.
