An order from the Federal Government has compelled Vice-Chancellors of all federal universities currently on the ongoing industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to immediately reopen for academic and allied activities as directed by their pro-chancellors.

Issuing the directive, Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike said the vice-chancellors must ensure that members of staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment for academic activities.

He warned that any staff who has not resumed by 4th December 2013 will automatically cease to be a staff of the institution, such that Vice-Chancellors will then be allowed to advertise vacancies for their positions.

According to Wike, the Federal Government is now sure that the continued industrial action is an attempt by ASUU to sabotage all efforts to address the issues, notwithstanding the commitment of government.

“As a responsible government, it cannot allow the continuous closure of public institutions as this poses danger to the education system and the future of Nigerian youths”, Wike said, also mandating the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure compliance with the directive.
