Members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly on Monday morning impeached their Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku.

The Speaker was impeached after 18 out of the 24 lawmakers of the House voted in favour of the impeachment motion moved by Hon. Frank Onwe, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Enyi Enyi.

He was immediately replaced by a female lawmaker, Hon. Helen Nwaobasi, who until her elevation represented Abakaliki South Constituency.

Her becoming the Speaker was sequel to a motion moved by one of the House members, Eni Uduma Chima of Afikpo South-West Constituency with a secondment by Hon. Jerry Obasi.

The House had earlier lifted the suspension placed on three of its members ― Frank Onwe, Eni Uduma Chime and the Deputy Speaker, Blaise Orji ― who had been on suspension as approved by the Speaker.
