Fire Guts Murtala Mohammed Airport

A part of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos was on Thursday razed by fire.

As at the time of publishing this report, officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the disaster.

However witnesses at the scene said the fire could have been caused by some cables that melted in the heat from some welding equipment being used at the affected section before the fire outbreak.

Some others suggested that it could have been the result of power surge.

The fire outbreak which on  ‘D’ Wing, the second floor of the airport terminal where the commercial department is located. It resulted in pandemonium as people, business owners and passengers scampered to safety.

The disaster was minimised due to the efforts of fire fighters, security officials and well-meaning Nigerians at the airport, who immediately cut off power supply to the airport.

General Manager in charge of Corporate Communications of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, said the fire was brought under control by men of the fire service attached to the airport.

Though there were no casualties, he could not confirm the cause of the incident, but said airport officials switched off of the power source which has now been restored.

He also said the fire did not affect normal business activities.
