Four Students of the Nassarawa State University, Keffi, were allegedly shot dead on Monday by some soldiers dispatched to the university to quell an ongoing student protest.

Eyewitnesses said the students of the university were embarking on the protest in the morning over scarcity of water and erratic electricity supply in the institution when soldiers invaded the campus. The four victims were some of the several hundreds who participated in the protest.

“Some soldiers invaded the school and started firing shots, which left four students dead,” one of the students said.

Spokesperson of the Nassarawa State Police Command, Michael Ada confirmed the killing of the students but denied that they were shot by security agents.

He said the commissioner of police in the state was already at the scene, trying to restore order.

Meanwhile authorities of the university have ordered an indefinite closure of the institution and compelled the students to vacate the campus immediately.
