Former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged religious leaders to pray for good fortune for the country ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Speaking at his Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun while receiving National President of the Pentecostal Federation of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Felix Omobude, Obasanjo said that as God’s project, only God can appoint the country’s leaders irrespective of the calculations and manipulations of politicians.

“Nigeria has passed through and surmounted difficult periods by the help of God, and the same God is able to help us again,” he said.

“So I urge clerics throughout the nation to pray to God over the choice of a leader for Nigeria. I always say that I am an incurable optimist about this country. If there is anything that I will ask of you, it is that you and other clerics should never stop fasting and praying for Nigeria.

“My short span of life has seen a few unexpected things in this country when we thought that the end would just happen, but God made us to scale through”.

Obasanjo added that as an incurable optimist about the Nigeria nation, Nigeria would someday earn a place among the world’s most desirable countries. However, this will only happen with the right mentality from the leadership.

In his response, Omobude, who is on a two-day visit to the southwestern state, described Obasanjo as a “special treasure” that cannot lose relevance in the country’s affairs. He also assured that the federation would continue praying for the country as well as promoting peace and unity.
