Hajiya Sefiya Hassan Akere, the foster mother of former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, is dead.

Though she died on Thursday, at the age of 101 after a brief illness, the announcement was made on Saturday by family members.

One of late Akere’s children, Alhaji Dattijo Aliyu, Director General of the Niger State Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and  Chairman of Niger Tornadoes Football Club  who made the announcement, said the woman, fondly called "Nna Mai Kifi" by the former President, died at about 3pm at the family house along Kuta Road, Minna, Niger State capital.

Aliyu said while alive, his mother served everyone she came in contact with, and that her house was always filled with children. She was a community leader.

She has been buried in line with Islamic tenets.
